Newly qualified journalists from across the UK have picked up awards from the country’s leading media companies.

The BJTC Journalism Awards highlight the outstanding TV, radio, online, podcast and social media work produced on industry accredited journalism training courses.

Magic Radio presenter Neev Spencer hosted the event at Bauer Media HQ in London, which saw finalists from 40 courses accredited by the BJTC (Broadcast Journalism Council) compete for the top honours.

Fifteen winners were chosen from more than 170 entries at the event on Thursday (November 20th).

Nominees included those from Cardiff University, University of Salford, City St Georges University, University of East Anglia, Nottingham Trent University, University of Sheffield, University of Westminster and Leeds Trinity University.

The Steve Harris Award, which recognises excellence in journalism, was won by Sanne Peck from the University of Sheffield for her TV documentary which uncovers the untold stories of three Caribbean families who at differing times, lived in the same Sheffield house between 1954 and 2022.

“The finalists chose some relevant and import subjects. Many of the stories gave a voice to the voiceless. The future of journalism is in good hands with these new recruits” said Chair of Judges Nimesh Joshi, Head of ITV West Country.

The BJTC is the UK’s largest industry-backed higher education training body for multiplatform, broadcast and mobile journalism and entries come from among the 3000 students studying on its accredited courses.

Previous winners have gone on to take up positions at leading media companies across the UK and around the world, including Sky, the BBC, ITV, Global, Bauer, Eurosport, Al Jazeera, Reuters and AP.
