The BJTC (Broadcast Journalism Training Council) has announced the finalists for the 2024 BJTC Journalism Awards.

The awards celebrate outstanding TV, radio, online, podcast and social media stories produced by students on industry accredited journalism courses.

Finalists represent the best of the next generation of journalists. Most of the nominees have now qualified and are starting their first jobs at leading UK media companies.

Many of the entries this year reflect the increasing coverage of inclusive journalism stories, including reports on neurodiversity, poor housing and mental health issues.

One of the most prestigious categories is Best TV Newsday sponsored by digital-first newsroom software system Dina and video production software Mimir. Students from the University of East Anglia have been nominated alongside those from the University of Leeds.

The 2024 finalists are from the University of Salford, University of Westminster, City University, Bournemouth University, University of East Anglia, University of Leeds, Nottingham Trent University, University of the West of England and University of Northampton.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Sky News HQ in London on 12th December.

Co-chair of Judges, BBC Breakfast Editor Richard Frediani said: “The finalists chose some relevant and import subjects. Many of the stories gave a voice to the voiceless. The future of journalism is in good hands with these new recruits.”

The BJTC is the UK’s industry-backed accreditation and training body for multiplatform, broadcast and mobile journalism and entries come from among the 3500 students studying on its accredited courses.

Previous winners have gone on to take up positions in the UK and around the world, including the Guardian, Telegraph, Sky News, the BBC, ITV, Global, Bauer, Eurosport, Al Jazeera, Reuters and AP.
