Shortlist revealed for BJTC Student Journalism Awards 2019

The BJTC, the UK’s industry-backed training body for online and broadcast journalism is delighted to announce the shortlist of nominations for its 2019 Student Journalism Awards.

Entrants from universities across the UK will compete in categories reflecting the broad range of genres and platforms with which today’s broadcast journalists now work.

The 11 categories include Best News Report, Feature and Documentary in both TV and Radio, as well as Best Online News Site and Best Podcast. One new category this year is Best Social Short, a response to the huge need for journalists who can produce quality short, captioned videos for news and social media feeds.

The Steve Harris Award for Excellence in Journalism, which comes with a £500 prize, will be awarded to the stand-out submission from amongst the 11 category winners.

BJTC Chief Executive Jon Godel said the striking professionalism of the submissions made it a tough job for judges to narrow down the more than 250 entries received from among the 50+ courses accredited by the BJTC.

“The quality of work produced by the entrants reflects the energy and enthusiasm that goes into developing first-rate journalists in such a rapidly changing industry. It’s exciting that so many talented journalists, trained to the BJTC’s high professional standards, are joining newspaper and broadcast newsrooms up and down the UK.”

The 2019 shortlist sees multiple nominations for Goldsmiths University of London, University of Sheffield, City University of London, University of Winchester, University of Gloucestershire and University of Leeds. Students from University of Salford, University of Central Lancashire, Falmouth University, Bournemouth University, University of Northampton, University of West England, Leeds Beckett University and University of South Wales also received nominations.

Full details of the nominations are available on the BJTC website here.

The awards ceremony will take place on 12th November at Sky HQ in London.
